Award all boxed up for top online retailer

Staff at online retailer PlasticBoxShop are celebrating after winning a major regional business award.

The North Yorkshire-based business was last night named Retailer of the Year at the prestigious 25th Anniversary Business Awards hosted by regional newspaper and online media group The Press.

Held at York racecourse and sponsored by insurance giant Hiscox, the glittering awards ceremony recognised the achievements of the region’s most dynamic businesses and business people, with finalists shortlisted across 16 categories.

More than 400 people attended the black tie event, including the team from Northallerton-based PlasticBoxShop, led by the company’s young founders Gary and Lisa Lyons. They waited nervously for the results of their Retailer of the Year category, where they faced tough competition from two other shortlisted finalists.

“When they announced us as the winner we were just ecstatic,” said a thrilled Gary.

“In the past we’ve been too busy with the business to go in for awards so we were really flattered when The Press contacted us a few months back about entering the 25th Anniversary Business Awards. To actually win Retailer of the Year is the icing on the cake and testament to all the hard work our team have put in.”

Quick to congratulate the company, all the way from the USA, was PlasticBoxShop’s brand ambassador Jesse McClure, star of hit TV show Storage Hunters. He had been following the awards live as they happened on The Press website and emailed: “This is awesome – you really deserve to win. I love working with you guys in the UK and it’s great to be associated with an amazing award-winning company. Go PlasticBoxshop!”

More congratulations came from across the border in Lancashire, where PlasticBoxShop has been the shirt sponsor for iconic football club Accrington Stanley since the start of the current season. Manager John Coleman said: “This is great news. PlasticBoxShop have been a huge help to Accrington Stanley as our shirt sponsor and I hope we can play a part in their continued success.”

Now the UK’s leading online supplier of plastic box storage solutions for the home, businesses and schools, PlasticBoxShop grew from humble beginnings. Gary and Lisa were running a small but successful hardware and discount store in the market town of Thirsk when they realised their best sellers by far were the plastic storage boxes they stacked on the pavement outside.

After experimenting with online sales they took a huge gamble to sell the shop and put everything they had – including remortgaging the family home – into setting up PlasticBoxShop. A decade on they are targeting a £10m. turnover within the next three years, can access £8m. worth of stock and can deliver large orders at short notice.
