Bathroom storage ideas: How to keep your bathroom tidy

bathroom storage ideas

You'll want your bathroom to be a calm space where you can get ready with minimal fuss each morning, or have a relaxing bubble bath after a long day at work. But, if it's cluttered with all of your lotions and potions, it's likely to be more chaotic than tranquil.

Finding a way to store all of your toiletries and essentials in a way that keeps them out of the way but easy to find can make a huge difference. So, to help you keep your bathroom tidy and organised, we've put together this guide, which includes all of our favourite bathroom storage ideas. Take some of these tips on board and you'll be a lot closer to creating that calming space you've always wanted your bathroom to be.

Start by decluttering

We all have shampoos, face washes, and moisturisers that we don't like, but hold on to because we don't know what else to do with them. But, if you have products that you know you're never going to use again, they're just taking up space and making your bathroom look unnecessarily messy. That's why the first step towards organising your bathroom should always be a thorough declutter. This will give you a much better idea of what you actually need to find room for. But, what should you do with the ones that you don't?

Donate

If you have any products that have been left unopened for any reason — maybe they were gifts that you're not sure about, or you made a mistake when you were out shopping — consider donating them to a local charity. The likes of women's shelters, foodbanks, and homeless charities are always in need of shampoos, soaps, conditioners, and toiletries in general. This is a great way of getting rid of anything you don't want, guilt-free.

Give to friends and family

If you've tried certain products and don't think they're for you, but you know someone who they might be more suitable for, why not reach out and see if they'd like to take them off your hands? Chances are, your friend or relative will be excited to receive some nice new toiletries for free, and you won't have to hoard them any longer!

Throw them away

If you have some items nobody will want — maybe they're expired or running low but no longer agree with you — it might be time to throw them out. Of course, you'll want to do this as responsibly as possible, so read up on what you can recycle. We have a guide to reducing your plastic waste, which will help you work out which materials are suitable for this, but you should also look into what your local council does and doesn't accept.

Some brands also have schemes where you can take their packaging back to the store so they can recycle it in the most efficient way. They'll may even offer a free gift if you take the time to do this, too, so we would highly recommend checking with any brands you've bought products from.

It's a good idea to get into the habit of getting rid of products as and when you decide you don't want or need them. This will go a long way towards helping you to keep your bathroom tidy once it's been organised.

Choose your storage boxes wisely

If you have a lot of toiletries, skin care, or even makeup, it makes sense to separate and organise everything, so you know where to look for a particular product. Using baskets and storage boxes to do this makes a lot of sense, as it will allow you to keep similar items — or those that you might use at the same time — together. Plus, you'll be able to place everything in a spot that makes the most sense for your grooming or beauty routine.

But it's important that you think very carefully about the kinds of boxes or baskets you choose to use. Here are just some of our top tips for picking the best storage boxes for your bathroom.

Avoid rattan

While rattan baskets might be on-trend, they aren't very practical for bathroom use, as the material can grow mouldy quite quickly if it's exposed to too much moisture. So, we would always recommend opting for storage solutions made from plastic instead. These won't be ruined by water or steam, and they're easy to wipe clean, which is important when you're dealing with products that might leak.

If you would still like to get the rattan look without the risk of mould, we stock plastic rattan baskets and boxes that will make the perfect alternative. They still have a woven style, but don't come with the downsides that natural rattan versions have.

Colour code your products, or choose clear boxes

To save time and effort, you'll want to make all of your products as easy to find as possible. This can sometimes get a bit tricky if you choose to organise and store everything in boxes, but there are some tricks you can use to locate everything quickly and easily.

One of the methods you can use is colour co-ordination. For example, you could purchase plastic storage boxes in a range of different colours, and then categorise your products using these. So, you might put all of your hair products in a blue box, your skincare in a green one, and miscellaneous things like nail clippers and tweezers in a yellow one. That way, when you're on the hunt for some hair mousse, you'll know exactly where to look.

If you would prefer all of your plastic storage boxes to have a uniform look, why not opt for some clear ones? This way, you'll be able to see what's in each one with minimal effort. This will still save you having to look in every box or basket when you're searching for something specific. We would still recommend categorising your products in these storage boxes for ease.

Go for boxes with lids

As we've mentioned, moisture will wreak havoc on rattan boxes, but it can also cause a lot of damage to some of your toiletries, and especially makeup. So, it's important you take steps to protect these products. We would highly recommend using plastic storage boxes with lids to do this.

Here at Plastic Box Shop, we stock a wide range of plastic boxes with lids, and they're available in a selection of different colours, and there are even clear ones. So, you can still make it easy to find everything you need by colour co-ordinating your items or storing them in transparent containers so you can see where everything is at a glance.

Use cabinets to hide as much as possible

This might seem like an obvious bathroom storage idea, but it's surprising how many people don't have any cabinet space in their bathrooms. This can then force you to leave everything on display, whether that's in baskets or wire caddies. So, if you don't currently have any cupboards, why not add one or two? It doesn't necessarily require a full bathroom remodel — one of the easiest ways to do this is by hanging a cabinet that doubles as a mirror above your sink. However, these don't always offer a great deal of storage space, so you might also want to add some bathroom sink storage, or even use some of your other wall space to hang a cabinet where you're able to keep larger items.

Make full use of corners

If you're looking for small bathroom storage ideas, or you can't decide where to add more storage to your space, don't discount the corners of the room! These are often overlooked, but they can actually offer a lot of storage opportunities.

Everything from corner shower caddies to corner cabinets and shelves can help you to maximise the space you already have. Plus, because you probably don't have much use for your bathroom's corner at the moment, you won't lose anything by putting them to work.

Keep your essentials close to hand

There will be items — such as your facewash and sunscreen — that you'll use every day. So, it's important that you keep all of these close to hand. If you keep them in a basket with lots of other bits and pieces, or in an overcrowded cupboard, you'll risk making a mess every time you need to grab them. Plus, it'll make your mornings slightly more stressful, which nobody needs.

If you have a minimal beauty or grooming routine, you could display all of your essentials on an easy-to-reach shelf. But, if your collection of everyday products is more extensive, this might start to look a bit cluttered. Instead, put them all on one shelf in a bathroom cabinet, or group them together in one box or basket so you can always locate them quickly and easily, but they're still hidden away.

Add a laundry basket

Dirty towels, old clothes, and discarded pyjamas can quickly turn a clean and tidy bathroom into a very messy space. So, it's a good idea to have a place to put all of this: namely, a laundry basket. Choosing one in a neutral colour that works with your bathroom's décor will ensure that it fades into the background, and it's a good idea to put it in or corner — or maybe even a cupboard, if you're lucky to have enough storage space — to keep it out the way.

Here at Plastic Box Shop, we stock a wide range of laundry baskets that are perfect for this. There are several styles to choose from, and most of them are available in a wide range of different colours, so you can pick out the one that will blend in with your space best.

Hang hooks to save space

If your space is quite small, you might be struggling to find any suitable bathroom towel storage ideas. But sometimes the simplest solutions are the best, so why not hang some hooks on your bathroom door or walls? This is an especially good idea if your towels are quite pretty, as they'll help to add an extra dash of decoration to your space. Plus, they won't be taking up any valuable floor or surface space.

It can also be a good idea to hang some smaller hooks on the inside of your bathroom cabinet doors. These can then be used to hold the likes of face cloths and bath puffs that you don't want to have on show.

Make sure you have a bin

Finally, it's surprising how many people don't think to add a bin to their bathroom. But, living without one will likely lead to cotton pads and buds, wipes, empty bottles, and old razors being left around your bathroom for far too long.

We would always recommend opting for a bin with a lid, as this will help to ensure your bathroom looks as clean and tidy as possible, but it'll still be practical. Here at Plastic Box Shop, we stock a selection of plastic bathroom bins that come in a variety of different colours. Whether you choose a pedal or swing design, it'll make a great addition to your bathroom. You'll soon wonder how you ever lived without one!
